SABAG was established to:
- Promote and protect the rights, interests, and wellbeing of background actors in South Africa’s film and television industry.
- Advocate for fair treatment, safe working environments, and transparent engagement practices within a largely unregulated sector.
- Provide a collective voice for background actors and support them in raising concerns such as poor working conditions, non-payment, unsafe sets, unfair treatment, and exploitation by unverified intermediaries.
- Foster a supportive community that educates performers, builds professionalism, and provides resources for their development.
- Encourage industry recognition of background actors’ contributions and promote fair, ethical best practices among productions, agents, and coordinators.
- Collaborate with local industry bodies to advance a more equitable, sustainable environment for background actors.
- Organise and coordinate efforts that empower performers to assert their rights with dignity and without fear of retaliation.
- Undertake lawful activities that further the wellbeing, respect, and professional standing of background actors across South Africa.
